Linda Martell: A Country Style Queen

Beyonce dropped her much anticipated Cowboy Carter album, which I’m very much enjoying! While I’m not naturally drawn to country music, this album is a vibe (it’s moreso just a Beyonce life album than a country album to me, since Beyonce is her own genre, after all, lol).

While I don’t have a history of being into country music, as a Texan (H-Town stand up!), I have long had an affinity for country/western style and cowboy culture, which I talk about a bit in episode 8 of the current Black Style Anecdotes season. In listening to the album, like many of you, I learned about Linda Martell. One of my favorite things to do when I hear the name of someone I’m not familiar with is Google them. Sometimes, I read a quick overview on Wikipedia; other times I go down a rabbit hole. I kinda did the latter on Linda Martell, particularly images of her, today.

Y’all. Linda Martell was a country music fly gurl!

She is a country music pioneer…a Black icon, and she served up some fire lewks, while breaking boundaries. Check out some of my faves below:

The draping of this blouse, the stone embellished pants and blouse, plus the hat tilted to the side of her head…chefs kiss!

Metallic floral suit me please! I especially love the cut of the jacket and the ankle pant. I’m also envisioning this pump as a kitten heel mule today, which I would need in my closet.

I am smitten with this paisley blouse! The embroidered vest can be used in so many looks, and pencil skirts with a front split are chic and versatile.

Pleated skirt. Check. Oxford blouse. Check. Tie. Check. This look is menswear meets womenswear, and definitely something I could see the stylish gals on IG wearing today!

Press play and get into this green floral dress with the cinched waist and fuller sleeves!

In so many Black Style Anecdotes episodes, guests talk about finding inspiration everywhere…the past, present, and future…art, nature, and people watching. As someone who loves vintage fashion, fly Black women, and country style elements, consider me inspired! Linda Martell was a style queen who I am glad Cowboy Carter introduced to me, both aesthetically and musically. As a living legend, I’d love to tell her style story (just putting that out there, lol).
